You could hardly see a car-length in front of you. As I was cautiously traveling from church to home I noticed several things about that experience that reminded me of the journey that God has us on as we begin Process Church.

you pay closer attention when you can't see all of where you're going

you slow down

you realize how important lights (esp. car lights) are to indicate the closeness of others

you see that a little light goes a long way

This path God has our family on has already produced every one of these same things (and more). Here's how...

God has reminded us that hearing His voice is made easier when we can't see all the details of where we're going.

God has continued to verify that doing His work best includes allowing plenty of time for planning.

God has encouraged our hearts with the closeness of His people & their lights of partnership through prayer, finances and some praying about moving to GA with us.

God has allowed us to see answers to our prayers... some that we have hardly even yet uttered.

Scripture As Source - Core Value #7

We all have philosophical & practical places to which we return; in part to assure ourselves that in fact we are still on course. And even if the declared origin is my own thinking, I return to my thoughts to check myself. It is equally true that most of us have a detectable set of values that we subscribe to personally - even if you're not religious.

It is in these ways that Process Church will strive to approach the Scriptures. Our goal will be to recognize the Bible as understandable & approachable and its principles transferable to modernity. In its pages are people... people who messed up... people who lived well... people. We will study these people and their lives in order to see ourselves, but most importantly to see the God who interacted with them and us.

Creative Change - Core Value #6

Most of us have an adverse reaction to change. After all, we work hard to create environments that are appealing to us. Why would we want to change them? Because we naturally resist change I want to build this philosophy of creative change into the value system of Process Church.

The reasons to have creative change as a main value are as endless as the discussion itself. God exhibits this kind of creativity all throughout history... starting in the beginning (pun intended).

There is also something incredibly invigorating about finding a creative way to use the abilities that God has placed in you. Too many churches have cookie cutter ministries that are created before there are people to fill them. Our philosophy will value people above specific ministries and will promote creativity as a means for helping our faith community to continually embrace new ways of doing ministry.

Spiritual Progress - Core Value #5

It was Socrates who said, "the life unexamined is not worth living." Could he possibly have known how right he was? People want purpose. Why am I here? Rick Warren's blockbuster book The Purpose Driven Life has been on the New York Times Best Seller List every week since 2002. As much as we value relaxation... we value progress more. We want to know that our lives have been significant.

We will seek to make Process Church a place that values those pursuits. This is not about developing key result areas or moving from good to great or seeking your best life now. This is about daily life that seeks authenticity. Core Value #7 will talk more about our blueprint. Simply put, without progress there is atrophy. We are not interested in where people begin, but rather if they are progressing.

Following Jesus - Core Value #4

Until this point Christian readers have been nervous wondering if and when there would be any mention of Jesus. And at this same hot spot perhaps some not-yet-Christians are similarly cautious but for the opposite reason. Let's face it - Jesus was/is in many ways a polarizing figure. So when we say we are going to be about following Jesus what are we talking about?

This is a pivotal issue in my mind. It is the main focus that led me to start Process Church. A little over a year ago I read a catalytic book entitled They Like Jesus but Not the Church. The book postulated that many pre-Christian people are not in fact turned off by the message of Jesus, but instead by those who claim to follow Him. I have found many of those same thoughts in my talks with people.

So who are we following? Which Jesus? Clearly there are differing definitions of who Jesus is. For our purposes we are talking about the Jesus of the Scriptures. We will seek to know Him. To study His life... what He said... where He went... what He did. It is the Jesus we find in the pages of Scripture that I believe is worth following.

Social Action - Core Value #3

If Jesus really matters, He has to matter in context. And the context that we find ourselves in is this culture. So for Jesus to be real to people (and to us, for that matter) He has to make a difference here and now. That is the reason social action is a core value of Process Church.

The gospel is the good news in every way. When we involve ourselves in the hurts and needs of our community we represent the message of Jesus in ways that a sermon cannot.

Many people have built in obstructions to receiving the message of Jesus when it is presented within the walls of a church building. By taking Jesus to people where they live those barricades are lowered - and sometimes even removed. Jesus seldom waited for people to come to Him. He was constantly looking for ways to meet the needs of people where they were. May we be busy doing the same.

Extending Forgiveness - Core Value #2

No one could really say why he ran away. Or perhaps he didn’t, but was kicked out of his home by his father for something foolish that he said or did. Either way, Paco found himself wandering the streets of Madrid, Spain, with hopes of entering into a profession that would most likely get him killed – bullfighting. Those who train under a mentor have a good chance of surviving this profession, but Paco’s memory of his mistakes and guilt over what happened blindly drove him to this one way street to suicide.

But that was the last thing his father wanted, which is why he tried something desperate which he desperately hoped would work. There was little to no chance that he would be able to find Paco by wandering the streets of Madrid, so instead he put an advertisement in the local newspaper El Liberal. The advertisement read, "Paco, meet me at the Hotel Montana at noon on Tuesday. All is forgiven! Love, Papa."

Paco is such a common name in Spain that when the father went to the Hotel Montana the next day at noon there were 800 young men named Paco waiting for their fathers … and waiting for the forgiveness they never thought was possible!

This story demonstrates the power that is found in forgiveness - the same forgiveness that Jesus offers to anyone who asks for it. Process Church will be a place that refuses to rank sins. There are no biggies... just sins. Sins that are ALWAYS forgivable.

Sharing Life - Core Value #1

The now popular phrase "it takes a village to raise a child" may be a derivative of an African proverb or it may be from Hillary Clinton or her ghostwriter... whatever its origin it rings true. The phrase has teeth beyond childrearing. With the exception of the solitary among us, most of us understand the beauty of being a part of a community - something bigger than ourselves.

As that relates to a faith community, Process Church will seek to be a place that values sharing life together. Our hope is that people can see church as a familiar friend - a place where real people journey through life together. And that church is not a location but instead a group of people who are trying to be authentic with each other spiritually.

Process Church Core Values: One Day at a Time

This week I shared a brief fly over version of what God is calling us to be as a church. It seems to me that there is far too much built in negativity when it comes to traffic signals. Most people call them stop lights. The further south you go the stronger the image - they call them red lights.

This past Sunday I challenged the people of our church to pray about how they should view traffic signals... well, sort of. Couldn't we just as easily call them go lights?

I remember an old preacher who liked to challenge the idea of going somewhere to serve God as the anti-instinctive response. Instead of saying, "I'm staying, but I'm willing to go", he would say, "I'm going, but I'm willing to stay." That's the opposite of how many of us think.

I ask you whether God might want you to move with us to Atlanta.

In the weeks to come as I unfold the specifics of what we are going there to do & just as important, why we think that matters - will you ask God what He wants you to do.

Of course some of you will have to stay... but are you willing to go?

Road Trip

Many people have asked about my recent trip to Atlanta with Natalie (our oldest daughter). Let me give you some of the highlights from my perspective... I think she would agree with most of these.

The first thing you need to know is that this was a VERY intentional trip! Day 1 of this 8-day road trip I had "the talk".... no, not that one... with Natalie. I wanted her to know why she was on this trip. After all, her mom didn't get to come. Her sister and brother were left behind as well. I told her very simply that the reason she was on this special trip with me was because she is the oldest. I explained to her that as the oldest I expected more from her than I do of the others. I told her that I need her to get her head (and more importantly, her heart) around this whole moving to Georgia thing so that the others can follow her good example. I know pretty old-school stuff for a 13-year-old... but that is honestly how I feel about it. She not only heard me, she listened. The rest of our trip was proof.

Frankly, there are too many great moments to write them all. I will try to give you the highest points of 8 days of father-daughter bonding...

13 hours of driving each way (all most all of which was filled with real conversation)

shopping at the Mall of Georgia (ok that was a high point for her)

enjoying meals together (all of them - every day)

watching movies together almost every night (and me explaining them to her)

Resisting Enigmatic Christianity

In my preparations for starting this new church I have been in almost-constant conversations with people. The biggest question I have been asking is, "What puzzles you about today's Christianity?"

One of the recurring themes has been the way that Christians seem to want to make extensive lists about what it means to be Christian (i.e. Republican, anglo, heterosexual, fill-in-your-favorite-item-on-the-list and you know the list I'm talking about). At first when I heard this I was very defensive... angry even. I thought, that's just because the rest of you are wrong & we're right and you just can't handle the truth! Over time I am beginning to see that my approach was exactly what they are talking about.

Even when it comes to issues that the Scripture seems to address clearly, there is a temptation to beat people up with those things. I certainly don't have it all together - on any level. So, I am learning that it is the approach to those discussions that matters. Pre-Christian people are even willing (in most cases) to accept the fact that I may not share their opinion if I am willing to listen to their thoughts and not crucify them for not seeing things the way I may see them.

In the end I am beginning to see that this stance gives credence to the Gospel. It reflects more accurately the spirit of Jesus and it affords me an opportunity to help people understand things that may not make sense to them.

I remember an old preacher used to say... "The Gospel really isn't the good news if it doesn't reach those who need it." While he was talking about world missions to unreached people groups, I think the same could be said of our sometimes puzzling approaches to discussions on topics that we identify as signposts of our Christianity.

A Bit Further South

First I should admit that I am (as are most men) the biggest baby when it comes to pain. Any physical discomfort is almost immediately translated as dire affliction. Our wives endure far more in bringing children into the world.

So I have this lower back thing... now I feel like one of the people I used to overhear in my grandmother's apartment complex. But seriously, what is my deal? I'm not even 40 years old and I get these crippling days where all I want to do is lay on the floor.

In this condition I hear God telling me too many things to write. One of them is that I need to toughen up a bit. Another whisper is that I need to take better care of this shell before it becomes a carcass. And though this pain is real and really frustrating, the best takeaway is that I can learn to deal with my microscopic hurt by reaching out to someone surrounded by their own immense distress.

Powerful & Effective Prayers

I have recently been re-reminded of that profound verse in James 5:16 ...the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. That little phrase continues to have more intense meaning to me as the years proceed.

Most recently I have been reminded of the importance of prayer as my family and I face this enormous task that God is calling us to... starting a new church.

Over the years I have received many (genuine) pleas for support from people in various endeavors. Because of my cynical side I always feel like when they are asking for financial and/or prayer they really mean financial support. In an attempt to avoid creating similar feelings in others, my thought was to build a Prayer Team separate from and ahead of any pleas for financial assistance. To do this well it meant hours of work to locate people and email addresses. Weeks later I am still calling on people to join us in this prayer project.

The biggest surprise has come as people have started joining us in prayer. Each Sunday evening when ministry is done I go back to my office and send a simple email message to The 300... they are our Prayer Team partners. Throughout the week I receive powerful & effective answers to those simple prayers spoken by righteous people.

The 300: Prayer Warriors for Process Church

Will you join us in praying? We are looking for 300 people who will lift the steps of this new ministry before the Father. There are a few significant reasons I have chosen this number. Gideon followed God against impossible odds with 300 men. The 300 men of Sparta were a force to be reckoned with. And even our new zip code starts with… you guessed it… 300. We are asking people to commit to praying for the McQueary family and Process Church on every calendar day that has a 3 in it (the 3rd, 13th, 23rd, 30th and some months, the 31st). This past Saturday I had committed to giving the entire day to work on the house. There are a few things that most of us can do to help the resale value of a house. These were the types of things on "the list". Among them... painting.

What I love about painting is seeing the total transformation that is revealed in the finished product. But that is not what painting is all about... especially not as gauged by time spent. Most of the time spent in painting happens in some of the smaller/less lovely tasks:

preparing the surface means scraping

sanding the scraped surface

brushing away the debris

then finally actually painting

So what do any of these things have to do with church planting? I'm finding these processes to be all but identical. Without getting lost in the list, suffice it to say that I find church planting to be MUCH about the smaller/less lovely tasks that are COMPLETELY necessary in the pursuit of the finished product that will one day be the church.

God, help me to enjoy the process.

The Difference Friends Make

Have you recently considered the impact that friendships have on your life? I was thinking about it this week as I said goodbye to a group of friends that I have been learning with for almost a year. Last year at our denominational district conference a group of us decided to form a Learning Community that would help us stay sharp in ministry and life.

So almost every month since then we have met to do just that. We have studied and prayed together. These guys have truly become some of my best friends. But why? I mean... really... after only 10 or so times together spread out over a year's time. What difference could possibly happen in that short amount of time?

Here are the top 3 for me:

they push me to be better spiritually

they sharpen my ideas by making sure they are biblical

they care about me beyond (outside of) the group

Do you have friends like these? It's never too late to start!

Where Does Vision Come From?

As fall arrives and we enter a new ministry year I have been contemplating this question... where does vision come from? It often seems that the blind are leading the blind. No direction. Or worse... different directions and no forward movement. So what of it?

I have been wrestling with this idea by looking at biblical examples of vision-finders and receivers. There seem to be some consistent threads. Do you see the same types of things?

1. true vision (spiritually speaking) comes from God
2. vision rarely (if ever) comes to groups... it almost always seems to be given to individuals
3. this same reality can very easily lead to abuse if the vision is not validated and embraced by other godly people

As I have been struggling to define biblical vision, I have been encouraged that, indeed, there is such a thing. I am wary of individuals who talk about things such as vision as if they are secrets... and usually that they are the only ones with access to such secrets. The reality of Jesus is that seeking and finding go hand in hand. There are a few practices (admittedly not revolutionary) that I have adopted to help me in this pursuit of vision:

pray... asking God to show me His vision

reading Scripture to see how God has moved in others in the past

pray again... asking God how He wants me to apply what I have read

reading from a variety of Christian authors of the present to see what God may be up to these days

pray some more... focusing on hearing God's voice even through man's words

Many times vision is not from God. It is from man's creativity. Or from the inspiration found in a great movie or song. People launch into things because of visions emanating from many sources. I too have had inspirational moments from some of these same places. But by God's grace, I only want the things that drive me (vision) to be from God!

Resisting Personal Urges

I have walked many roads in my short life. To the point of my entire post I will refrain from specifying each of these roads as part of my personal resistance... resisting my own urges. I have walked with Jesus down most of these same pathways.

I will further admit to being given to emotion. I am the first (and usually only) one in my house to cry at the appropriately sentimental time in a movie. I am the one making the impassioned pleas for more of this or less of that. I am the mercy-showing disciplinarian... at times to my wife's chagrin. I am a leader and a joiner - that is, I try to lead other people to join together for a common cause.

Frankly I used to be of the opinion that there was only one true brand of Christianity... which (not coincidentally) happened to be the brand that I belonged to at the time. This opinion was held so firmly that there were many people who I then labeled as apostate (or worse) that I now identify as Jesus-followers. I am embarrassed at things I have said in that regard. I have asked some of those same people to forgive me and now am enriched by their friendship.

Recently a dear friend of mine has chosen to chronicle some of his personal journey with Jesus. There have been statements made for and against his words - and not surprisingly. I'm pretty sure that not so long ago I would have felt it necessary to join in the scrutinous discussion. So I'm not voting on this one. There are close personal friends on both sides of this for me. There has been deep (in some senses irreparable) damage done already.

The Jesus way is personal. This venue is impersonal. Therefore, at least so far as the blogosphere is concerned, I will remain silent. Instead of talking about people I choose to talk to them. And if you truly care about any individual... perhaps you should do the same.

All I Really Needed to Know I Learned On the Daily Show

Some people watch television to unplug and relax. Think.

The Parable of the Deer

This may or may not be meaningful to you. Personally, I'm not much of an outdoorsman. On a recent 1500 mile trip I was overwhelmed by the powerful imagery of (and similarity between) the way I found myself watching for deer and the ways in which I seek people who are not-yet-Christian. This story will contain the deer part... hearing the parable is up to you.

Seeing Deer
One can have a desire to see our fury friends and cease to lay eyes on a single one. There are several keys that I found helped me to see the deer. In a little less than two hours I saw 18 live ones and 9 of the other kind.

the right time of day (typically dawn or dusk) - they like cooler temperatures

knowing where to look

requires vigilance - constant watching

the looking makes time fly

there are even signs noting a historical presence

Distractions to Seeing Deer
As I was watching for and seeing these beautiful creatures I noticed that there were other things vying for my attention. They weren't necessarily bad things (though some were). But these things made it very difficult for me to see the deer.

trees

the speed at which things were passing me by

trying to operate a moving vehicle while watching

writing these thoughts down so I wouldn't forget them

phone calls

heat... as the sun and the temperature rose the deer vanished

Realities of Deer Seeking
I'm sure experiences vary and geography has much to do with my fortune of seeing so many deer in such a relatively short amount of time. This caused me to think... what were other realities that I was facing as part of this process?

some don't make it... remember the 9 mentioned earlier

most travel together

almost all were near the edge of a wooded area

few were out in the open looking for something to eat

I learned much that day. Truthfully I'm pretty sure I would have remembered it all without writing it down. But now you can know the story too.

Who Is God?

Much has been written and said about this One named God. In His name beautiful things have been done and ugly wars have been fought. He is credited with the creation of worlds and children. Many people have received instructions about life that they claim came from this God. Who is He... really? How can we definitively know what He is like and maybe more importantly, what He wants us to be like?

I've been thinking about this lately. It seems to me that especially when we draw near to things that are clearly out of our control we are prone to look to this God. In times of terrorism we have asked God to "bless America". Weddings, funerals, baby dedications... many of these events invite God to preside (or so we say/pray). My family and I are in a time like that even now and I have been searching for this kind of help from God.

There are many comforts to be found in knowing and believing the Scriptures. It is the journal of God. I can read it to discover realities about God. There is a place to uncover mysteries that are greater than my understanding. So I went to this book - the Bible - to see some of the ways that God dealt with people. I decided to start in Genesis... the book of beginnings. The things I have learned and been reminded of about God are too many to print. Allow me to share a few:

God is creative... it's always been that way

God made people to be together

God knows everything about everything

God made people in His image

God loves protecting people

God reluctantly punishes people

God is merciful

God says hard things too... He's probably the only One who ever should

God knows what is in people's hearts... He's probably the only One who ever could

God keeps all of His promises... He's probably the only One who ever will

There are so many other things. These are just a few of the high points of the first few chapters. God's history is clear in the pages of His Word. His present and future are equally clear as He continues to act and move in the lives of real people and their circumstances.

What's In A Name?

I have an extreme fascination with words. The words I choose say so much about who I am. How I think... or fail to. The longer I live the more carefully I choose my words. I realize that they are very powerful for encouragement or harm.

So why the blog name change? Some of you have actually been asking. Now more than ever I am acutely aware of the effect that words have on people's viewpoints. And while "tangible theology" (the title of my old blog) may be meaningful to me, its wording may elicit more confusion than clarity.

One of the early lessons I remember learning in speech class was to know your audience. In my career and life I have benefited from that thought more than I possibly could have imagined as a 14-year-old when I first heard it. It is that consideration that frames my decision to consider some intentional ministry re-focusing of which this blog will be an important part.

While a portion of my audience has always been and will continue to be those who already believe in Jesus, I have been overwhelmingly burdened of late to consider well the vast majority of those who do not yet believe. They are, after all, the majority... the Scriptures say there will always be more who find themselves on the wanting side of faith. So how can I not consider them?

There are 3 realities that keep repeating themselves in my studies of Scripture and the culture around me.

many who live life without Jesus have largely chosen so because of misconceptions of what following Him would mean

so-called church people are the reason for most of those same misconceptions

if pre-Christian people came in contact with the real Jesus... they would want to follow Him

So, why the name? Of all the roles I happily assume: Christian, husband, father, son, brother, friend... only one of those helps me make all of the other ones better. Because my relationship with Jesus informs all my other relationships that is the way I want to be known by those who do not yet know Jesus. Even if they think I'm an ok dad or husband or whatever... I want to be known as... the Jesus guy.
